What Are Chinese Radicals?

Chinese characters are often built from smaller, reusable components called radicals (部首, bùshǒu). Each radical carries a hint about the character's meaning or pronunciation. By learning common radicals, you can decode unfamiliar characters and remember them more easily.

Why Radicals Matter for HSK Learners

Instead of memorizing each character as a unique drawing, break it into parts. For example, 好 (hǎo, good) combines 女 (woman) and 子 (child) — a woman with her child is “good.” Recognizing these building blocks speeds up your learning and makes characters feel logical rather than random.
